iciHaiti - Health : Sharp decrease in cholera cases
According to the latest data from the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization (PAHO / WHO), since 2016, the epidemiological situation in Haiti indicates a marked decrease in the transmission of cholera. In 2017 for the first 28 epidemiological weeks of the year, 7,901 suspected cases of cholera were reported by the Ministry of Public Health (MSPP) against 22,186 cases in 2016 for the same period.

The total number of deaths also dropped to 88 in 2017, against 202 deaths in 2016, a decrease of 56.4% for the same period.

The Ministry of Health notes that in 2017 from the 23rd week so far, it is the period with the lowest number of suspected cases since the epidemic began in 2010. Emphasizing that this situation is all the more remarkable given that the rainfall accumulated in April and May 2017 was equal to, or even greater than, the level measured during Hurricane Matthew in October 2016. This positive trend was facilitated by the effective approach to the rapid response to cholera in Haiti.

Recall that Haiti between October 2010 and July 31, 2017 registered 814,551 suspected cases of cholera including 9,693 deaths.
