iciHaiti - Social : New initiative to promote deaf culture
The Center for Inclusion, whose mission is to support and strengthen the capacities of organizations of people with disabilities, a project led by the Office of the Secretary of State for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities (BSEIPH) and "Christian Blind Mission" (CBM) thanks to funding from the European Union, has recently launched a club of practice of sign language that aims to promote the deaf culture in Haiti.

This Club is a place of exchange between people who are deaf, hard of hearing and hearing; categories of people who are called to work together every day but who can not communicate properly.

"In the absence of good communication, deaf people are often uninformed. It will be an opportunity for them to be better informed, for example," said Fenel Bellegarde, Communication Officer at BSEIPH adding "On the other hand, hearing people can explore the deaf culture and appreciate the ideas of those with disabilities hearing. They will also be able to improve their skills in learning sign language," emphasizing that sign language education should be encouraged in Haiti because it can contribute to a greater inclusion of people living with hearing impairments.
