iciHaiti - Social : Earthquake of 1842 Haiti remembers 11/05/2015 12:43:00
Last Thursday, commemoration of the 171st anniversary of the earthquake of May 7, 1842, a march was organized through the streets of Cap-Haitien. Multiplex radio program on several radio stations, a distribution of over 700 life jackets and 25 canoes to the people of Labadee and photographic exhibitions marked this day of remembrance. Recall that before January 12, 2010, the last great earthquake that hit the country dated back to the nineteenth century. It was May 7, 1842, with a magnitude of 8.1 on the Richter scale an earthquake hit the north of the island. Half of the 10,000 residents of Cap-Haitien died and 300 others disappeared in a tsunami that followed the quake, on the north coast of the island. According to experts, the northern fault who would be at the origin of this earthquake, stores energy for 171 years and its release could give rise to earthquakes of magnitude greater than 7 on the Richter scale.
