iciHaiti - Dominican Republic : Seizure of more than 4 tons of smuggled garlic from Haiti

The Dominican army seized more than four tons of garlic coming from Haiti, and arrested a man who tried to introduce these goods illegally across the border of Dajabón.

437 bags of garlic were seized by members of the Intelligence Directorate (G2) of the army, weighing about 22 pounds each, totaling about 9.614 pounds, found inside a truck driven by Tanel Gonzaga Vargas Almonte, which was arrested at a military checkpoint in the sector "el Laureal" on the road of Montecristi-Dajabón as part of the "Shield" operation executed by the army along the border.

The man who offered no resistance when arrested, said the truck was loaded with "fiber and thread." Colonel Roberto Sosa, Commander of the Tenth Infantry Battalion of the Army in Dajabon, said the driver presented a certificate issued by the customs authorities, which proved to be a fake, which trigger the search of vehicle and led to the discovery of the contraband that was seized as well as the vehicle.
