In terms of health, it is essential to guarantee universal access to reproductive health care. In Haiti, the proportion of women whose delivery was attended by skilled health staff has increased since 2006 (from 24.2% in 2000 to 37.3% in 2013). However, almost two thirds of deliveries are still without skilled attendance, particularly in rural areas and the maternal mortality rate in 2013 was among the highest in the region of Latin America and the Caribbean with 157 deaths for 100,000, according to institutional records.
Although 99% of Haitians are aware of modern contraception, its use has only increased by 22% in 2000 to 31% in 2012. The percentage of young women aged 15 to 24 years, carriers of AIDS is three times higher than for young boys the same age. Moreover, in Haiti the entry into reproductive life is on average at the age of 16 years and is linked to the social vulnerability of young people. Nevertheless, it is positive to note that reproductive precocity decreases from 27% to 9% for teenage girls with education.
