Canada and Haiti officially established diplomatic relations in 1954 (61 years 7 months), when Edward Ritchie Bellemare was appointed Chargé d’Affaire of the Canadian Embassy in Haiti (9 November 1954 to 15 July 1957). Over the years, relations between both countries have been further cemented with the growth of a substantial Haitian community in Canada as well as the continued presence of Canadian development organizations in Haiti.

Haiti is the largest beneficiary of Canadian development assistance in the Americas. The Government of Canada delivered more than $1.6 billion in development and humanitarian assistance to Haiti since 2006, including $1 billion since the 2010 earthquake.
