iciHaiti - Justice : International Human Rights Day

The Embassy of the United States in Port-au-Prince celebrated the International Day of Human Rights by meeting with established and emerging actors from the field.

For the event, about 40 organizations were present, along with certain Embassy staff, for a brief work session on four topics chosen for the day: child protection, women’s rights, inclusivity, and the rule of law.

US Ambassador Peter Mulrean praised the work of the participants, noting that the International Day of Human Rights, was an occasion to not only share the progress made but also to celebrate those who toil in the field, often with little recognition.

As for Political Counselor Melinda Crowley, she described her commitment to working closely with Haitian human rights actors, listening to their concerns, in order to help address the issues important to them.

Dr. Fils-Ely Thelot, President of the Haiti’s national anti-trafficking committee, also spoke. He shared the story of a 13-year old victim of trafficking and the tragic results, exhorting the audience to do all in their power to assure the rights of every individual.
