After a spike in the number of suspected cholera cases in the departments of Sud and Grand Anse in the two months following Hurricane Matthew, the number of suspected cases of cholera reduced drastically in both departments in the month of December. Meanwhile, there was a significant reduction in the number of suspected cases in the three departments where the incidence of cholera has been historically higher: Centre, Artibonite and Ouest. The improvement in quality of treatment centers, the increase in the number of rapid response teams and the vaccination campaign in South and Grand’ Anse contributed to the control of the disease.

Let's recall that in January 2017 1,856 suspected cases (-65% compared to January 2016) and 28 new deaths (-54% compared to January 2016) were registered by the ministry of health, the lowest monthly figure since August 2015. However, the maintenance of these positive trends may be threatened by the lack of funding that has been seen this year.

From October 2016 to January 2016 there were 805,000 cumulative cases and 9,483 cumulative deaths.
