iciHaiti - Environment : For the returning to the «Tree Season» in Haiti

Before 1990 in Haiti, there was a tree festival, which was celebrated every year throughout the national territory on the last Friday of May, through reforestation activities. This festival was part of the "Tree Season" which ran from April 15 to the last Friday of May.

This celebration is still possible today, which is why the non-profit association "Promotion for Development" (PROMODEV), asks the Government and civil society organizations to adopt a decision and mobilize resources necessary for the return of the "Tree Season", in particular the National Tree Day, with a view to renewing and intensifying the vegetation cover in Haiti.

Recall that Tree Day is a celebration where citizens are invited to plant or nurture trees. This festival was initiated by J. Sterling Morton, then Secretary of State for Agriculture of the United States and Robert Furnas who decided to plant trees on 10 April 1872 in Nebraska City.

Celebrated in several countries, this celebration is often the occasion for the public authorities to sensitize the populations to plant a tree in order to limit the effects of the desertification.
