In the Region of the Americas, from the beginning of 2017 to mid-December, a total of 13,582 suspected cases of cholera have been reported in the island of Hispaniola, of which 99% in Haiti (13,468 cases of which 157 deaths). During the same period, 114 suspected cases of cholera were reported in the Dominican Republic, including 2 deaths.

The Dominican Republic and Haiti both reported a decrease in the number of cases compared to 2016.

In Haiti, the 13,468 reported cases represent a decrease of 68% compared to 2016 and are the lowest since the beginning of the Haiti epidemic in October 2010.

Likewise, the number of reported deaths between 2016 and 2017 decreased by 65% (from 447 to 157 deaths) and represents the lowest number of deaths reported since 2010.
