iciHaiti - Quebec : Strengthening of municipal ties with Haiti
As part of the strengthening of the cooperation links between the Union of Municipalities of Quebec (UMQ) and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) with its partners in Haiti, mayors Maude Laberge and Vicki-May Hamm are in Haiti to participate in a forum organized by the National Federation of Women Mayors of Haiti (FENAFEMH). During the meeting, they shared their experiences with their Haitian counterparts, as well as their political commitments, the integration in municipal associations and the importance of citizen participation.
Laberge, Chair of the Women's Commission and of the UMQ, and Vicki-May Hamm, Member of FCM, also discussed other aspects of governance and local management, with representatives from the communities of the region of Palmes (West of Port-au-Prince).
The municipal cooperation program between Québec City and Port-au-Prince started in 2011. It helps to strengthen the institutional capacities of both countries, as well as to promote the transparency and efficiency of regional administrations and the collaboration at the regional level of national associations.
