Message from Ambassador Guy G. Lamothe :

"Brothers and sisters Haitian compatriots,

The celebration of the 215th anniversary of the Battle of Vertières provides us with the pleasant opportunity to revisit with you and for you the historical significance of this unique and epic that changed the course of the beings and things of universal history.

This celebration comes at a time when the descendants of Dessalines and Pétion are experiencing an extremely difficult political journey, where the evolution of our Nation is facing various fields of interest and facing major challenges in all sectors of our society.

Haitian brothers and sisters living in Mexico,

If in the present conjuncture we bear together the weight of our multifaceted problems, it goes without saying that we must also look for solutions that will create the conditions necessary and indispensable for the advent of a collective better being.

In this context, let us recognize that the brilliant victory of the indigenous army in Vertières constitutes a capital didactic reference and an essential source of inspiration. Vertières teaches us attachment to the cult of freedom and sovereignty. Freedom for a people, sovereignty for a country.

Vertières shows us the path of understanding, reconciliation and union; pathways essential to the establishment of a harmonious social climate between the sons and daughters of one homeland, Haiti.

Vertières reminds us of the imperative obligation to privilege the common interest, to make an act of abnegation of courage and sacrifice for a new order of things which is profitable to all.

Vertières leaves us the example of a group of men and women, aware of the indecency of a 'status quo' and determined to start a new era.

My dear compatriots,

In terms of the challenges to take up in the Haitian news, it must be made clear that the task to be undertaken is gigantic. Can we achieve victory ? The answer is unequivocal : YES.

Yes and only if, as in Vertières, we put our special disputes under the bushel, to put our citizen energies in a bundle.

Yes and only if, as in Vertières, we look together in the same direction, that which leads to the institution of a society without exclusion, in perfect adequacy with republican, Haitian, democratic and universal values.

May the spirit of Vertières inspire us all, in the present and for the future.

May the spirit of Vertières inspire us all, both inside the country and in the diaspora.

May it please God to assist us in this new venture."
