iciHaiti - Economy : Food for the Poor alongside fishermen

In order to enable the development of coastal communities, Food for the Poor has rolled out the concept of a fishing village where fishermen are brought together in association in order to exploit the fishing sector and improve their standard of living.

In 2018, Food for the Poor worked with 45 fishing villages. Each village initially received 4 fiberglass boats, 4 engines and fishing gear, Fish Concentration Devices (FADs), a modern storage space and a tank.

In addition, a solar powered "freezer" system and lighting are installed in each village.

In 2018, Food for the Poor distributed 40 boats, 57 engines and 157 fishing kits. These efforts enabled the Fishermen's Associations to catch 889,711.77 pounds of fish (± 403 tonnes) and generate an income of more than 50 million gourdes. It should be noted that each fishing association manages its own funds.
