Monday in Navarrete (North of the Dominican Republic) 9 people, including 8 illegal Haitian agricultural workers died when the driver of Dominican origin lost control of his vehicle overloaded of passengers and fell into an irrigation canal in the Barrero Adentro community. All passengers drowned, including the driver.

The preliminary report indicates that the driver apparently tried to escape from a military checkpoint located between the municipalities of Navarrete and Esperanza (North) before the accident, which may have been caused by excessive speed.
