iciHaiti - Security : More than 300 earthquakes recorded in the country in 2019
The engineer Claude Prépetit, the Director of the Bureau of Mines and Energy, made a summary assessment of the seismic activity in Haiti during the year 2019. He revealed that during the past year 301 earthquakes of a magnitude varying from 1 to 4.3 on the Richter scale had been recorded of which 42% took place in the sea stressing that due to their small magnitude and depth Haiti did not suffer any tsunami.

Note that a tsunami at sea requires a magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter scale and a depth of less than 50 km.

The departments most affected are the South-East, the West near Lake Azuéi), the North-West and the Nippes, which account for nearly 80% of the earthquakes recorded.

Claude Prépetit, deplored that despite the seismic microzonation study carried out in 5 communes of the metropolitan region (Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Pétion-ville, Cité Soleil and Tabarre) available on the websites of the MTPCT, the Laboratory national among others "There is no appropriation of these studies at the level of local authorities" to reduce the vulnerability of the population in the control of constructions and education of the population.
