Since the major 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit southwestern Haiti, 378 aftershocks have been recorded, the National Seismology Center of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo reported on Monday (August 23).

The Center said that after the earthquake recorded on Saturday August 14, one of the first aftershocks had a magnitude of 6.0, while among the following ones, magnitudes of 5.8, 5.5 and 5.3 had been noted among others

UASD Professor Jottin Leonel Collado said that "now these aftershocks have to be studied to see how the energy moves."

For his part, geologist Claude Preptit, Director General of the Technical Seismology Unit of the Bureau of Mines and Energy, indicates that aftershocks are likely to continue, hence the need for the population to remain cautious.

In addition, he says he is particularly worried about the North where the fault that crosses this region continues to accumulate energy which could cause a major earthquake.
