iciHaiti - Cayenne : Evictions and destruction of the Haitian shantytown of Mont-Baduel
According to the Bureau of Geological and Mining Research, an imminent risk of landslide threatens Mount Baduel (Cayenne), as has already happened in 2009, 2012, 2017, 2020 and March 14, 2022

The Territorial Collectivity of Guyana (CTG) is considering the evacuation of this area occupied by Haitians who live illegally in precarious constructions

Garry Assad, Head of post ai of the Consulate General of Haiti in Cayenne multiplies meetings with local and community actors in order to reflect on possible solutions concerning the accommodation of certain compatriots living on Mont-Baduel who are among several families invited to leave the space considered a risk zone by the authorities.

Last week Assad gathered at the Consulate several community leaders, religious leaders and media personalities. A committee has been created to monitor the various proposals made on this occasion.

On March 22, after receiving Joachim Hyasine from SAMU-Social, who expressed concern about the situation, Garry Assad met Gabriel Servile, President of the CTG, on the same day. Together, they discussed the steps already taken and in progress in the context of the rehousing of families.

Other meetings are planned between the actors concerned for an assessment of the situation before the date scheduled for the execution of the decision, evacuation and destruction scheduled for March 24.

Note that if the political promises not to evict or destroy the houses of Haitians before they are rehoused, the reality on the ground is very different and more than one Haitian family has already found their belongings in the street exposed to bad weather and their house destroyed without being rehoused.
