Last weekend, the Public Ministry launched the Operation Border aimed at dismantling a major network dedicated to the trafficking of undocumented Haitian migrants.

It took more than a year of investigation to constitute the 510-page file, the authorities used undercover agents and telephone interceptions, as well as drones and surveillance of the residences of the main suspects which are Eddy Rafael Cordero Villanueva, Osiris Rafael Estévez Fortuna and Nelson, Leonardo Acosta Cruceta.

During the operation, five soldiers and 10 civilians were arrested and brought to justice to obtain coercive measures consisting of 18 months of pre-trial detention, the time to complete the instruction of the investigation, given that it is a national network with ramifications in other provinces.

The network financed, facilitated and transported migrants (4,500 to 8,000 pesos per passage through Dominican territory) using motorcycles and buses, in complicity with soldiers assigned to this border area of the country.
