Saturday April 13, 2024, fishermen found a boat adrift between the towns of Bragança and Quatipuru in the state of Para in the Amazon (northern Brazil), in which there were around twenty bodies in advanced decomposition and alerted the authorities of their macabre discovery.

Arriving on site, rescuers towed the boat to the shore after being alerted by the fishermen.

According to the civil police and forensic experts, there were at least 20 bodies. Bragança federal police chief Alexandre Calvinho said they were believed to be Haitian illegal migrants who could have died of starvation and dehydration, but more in-depth analyzes are needed.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office said in a statement that it had opened a criminal and civil investigation into the case to confirm the cause of death, the exact number of victims and their identities.
