iciHaiti - Environment : Haiti recorded 67 earthquakes in May 2024

According to observations made from local networks (Ayiti-seismes and UTS) and regional networks (Cuba, Jamaica and Dominican Republic), Haiti for the period from May 1st to 31, 2024 recorded 67 earthquakes of magnitudes between 1.1 and 3.3 on the Richter scale.

63 of the earthquakes (94.03%) had a magnitude less than or equal to 3 and 25 (37.31%) occurred at a depth less than or equal to 10 km. 20 (29.85%), occurred at sea including 7 along the northern fault; which suggests a risk of a tsunami if the conditions had been met.

During the month of May 2024, the 4 departments where the most earthquakes occurred were the North-West (21 earthquakes, 31.34%); West (18 earthquakes, 26.87%), the Nippes (10 earthquakes, 14.93%) and South-East (7 earthquakes 12.5%), i.e. a total of 56 earthquakes (83.5%) out of 67. Against 45 out of 55 (81.8%) the previous month (April).
