According to the General Directorate of Penitentiary and Correctional Services, the Dominican prison population in July 2024 consisted of 25,987 inmates in total, including 14,639 preventive detainees. This level of preventive detention raises much concern among lawyers and university professors, who ask judges and prosecutors to stop abusive and excessive use of preventive detention treatment.

According to the latest available data from the General Directorate of Penitentiary Services, Dominican there would be 1,425 Haitians imprisoned for various crimes ranging from drug trafficking to homicide. Haitians represent 80% of all foreign prisoners detained in the Dominican Republic.

The Haitian prison population represents 5.4% of the total Dominican prison population (25,987 inmates)

The largest group of Haitian prisoners is held in the La Victoria penitentiary (338 inmates)

Of the total number of foreign prisoners (1,771), 1,262 (71%) are in preventive detention and 509 have been sentenced.
