iciHaiti - Insecurity : Gangs control almost all of the country's highways

Gangs control almost all national highways, hindering the free movement of citizens. Gangs have installed toll booths on the roads, further complicating the already precarious situation of motorists and truckers.

These gangs earn significant daily income by extorting money from motorists, truckers, and public transport vans, contributing through their racketeering to the increase in poverty and the high cost of living.

Many people want to leave Haiti, whose airport has been closed since November 2024. To leave the country, they must generally take the road to Hugo Chavez International Airport in Cap-Haïtien, which is extremely dangerous, and must pay the numerous toll booths.

Truck drivers who must maintain their operations are directly affected, and the amounts demanded can reach several thousand gourdes, depending on the vehicle.
