iciHaiti - Cap-Haitien : Cleaning and reshaping work on the Haut du Cap River
On Friday, May 9, 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Rural Development (MARNDR), represented by its Departmental Agricultural Directorate of the North, officially launched the resumption of work to dredge and reshape the Haut du Cap River over a distance of 6 km. Work began in April 2021. https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-33544-icihaiti-north-cleaning-and-reshaping-of-the-haut-du-cap-river.html

This initiative is part of efforts to protect at-risk areas and prevent natural disasters. Each torrential rain season brings disastrous consequences to the North department, including loss of life, destruction of infrastructure, population displacement, agricultural damage, and paralysis of the local economy. The flooded Haut du Cap River is transforming several neighborhoods into disaster zones, plunging the population into fear with each weather warning.

The Minister of Agriculture, Vernet Joseph, emphasized the strategic importance of this relaunch in light of the current situation. According to him, it is a concrete preventative measure that demonstrates the government's commitment to acting before crises occur. He called on the population to show solidarity and fully collaborate with the technical teams deployed on the ground to ensure the success of this major project.

This project is part of the Ministry's overall vision to strengthen the resilience of the country's natural infrastructure and protect urban and agricultural areas vulnerable to flooding. River dredging is more than a simple technical operation : it represents a major commitment to public safety, environmental protection, and the preservation of human lives.
