iciHaiti - Health : Nearly 2,000 cases of HIV detected in prisons
The Association of Volunteers for the Reintegration of Prisoners in Haiti (AVRED-Haiti) expresses its deep concern after Patrick Pélissier, the Minister of Justice, revealed that nearly 2,000 cases of people living with HIV/AIDS have been identified in Haitian prisons. Even more alarming, 500 of these inmates have been seriously affected by the U.S. government's suspension of aid for their treatment, jeopardizing access to vital medication.

This situation highlights the glaring vulnerabilities of people deprived of their liberty, often overlooked in public health policies. The Minister indicated that he has requested the support of partners to respond to this health emergency in prisons. However, the response must be rapid, coordinated, and sustainable.

As an organization committed to defending the rights of prisoners, AVRED-Haiti calls for national and international mobilization to guarantee all prisoners equitable access to health care, including antiretroviral treatment.

"The right to health is a fundamental right, which does not stop at the prison gates. We are closely monitoring this situation and remain available to collaborate with authorities and partners to ensure respect for human dignity in prisons."
