Sixteen months after the deliberate destruction of the border gate in Ouanaminthe to prevent the government from closing the border https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-41210-haiti-flash-haitians-break-down-the-border-gate-with-a-container-truck-video.html following tensions related to the construction of the irrigation canal on the Massacre River on the Haitian side, Haiti finally installed a brand new border gate on May 18, 2025.
This installation is the result of an initiative by the Departmental Delegate for the Northeast, Dionel Germain, and the Vice-Delegate for the Ouanaminthe district, Mirbel Charles.
Authorities affirm that this new gate is part of a logic of shared security, peace, and harmonious coexistence. It aims to restore order and national dignity, and to effectively combat insecurity along the border. It also reflects a desire for peaceful cooperation with the Dominican Republic.
