iciHaiti - Education : More than US$20 million to teach 1.5 million Haitians to read and write
Me Mozart Clérisson, the new Secretary of State for Literacy, appointed by the Council of Ministers on August 20, 2025, announced a literacy plan aimed at teaching reading and writing to 1.5 million people from October 2025 to September 2026.

With a budget of $20.8 million, this represents a major step forward for a country where more than 2.5 million Haitians are illiterate (as of 2024). The West Department has an illiteracy rate of 34%, followed by Artibonite (15%).

As part of this project, each department will be equipped with a coordination center, awareness campaigns will be implemented, transportation for educators will be made available, and training for approximately 50,000 trainers and supervisors will be included.

Training sessions have already begun in the West, Northwest, and Artibonite departments, while illiterate populations are being identified in each department.

However, the success of this project depends on the government's ability to disburse the promised funding.
