iciHaïti - Obituary : Passing of Professor Jean Coulanges, Haitian anthropologist and artist 11/01/2026 09:19:26
Professor Coulanges was a respected figure in Haitian academic and cultural circles. A professor at UEH, he distinguished himself as a fervent defender of Haitian intangible heritage and a champion of the recognition and transmission of traditional knowledge, particularly that related to popular cultural practices. A committed intellectual and inspired creator, he skillfully combined academic rigor with artistic expression. He was renowned for his work documenting and preserving traditional songs, fearing the threat of oblivion. He leaves behind a body of work marked by coherence, a sense of duty, and dedication. Professor Coulanges also held important positions in the cultural field, including that of Permanent Secretary of the Haitian National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO. The Rectorate respectfully bows before the memory of this renowned academic and artist, whose intellectual and cultural legacy will live on. In this time of sorrow, the Rectorate of the State University of Haiti, on behalf of the entire UEH community, extends its deepest condolences to the family of Professor Jean Coulanges, his loved ones, his colleagues, his former students, and the entire national cultural community."
