iciHaïti - Shipwreck : The bodies of the 4 missing teachers have been found and identified (names) 03/02/2026 08:52:40
A crisis team was quickly established at the Consulate on Saturday to gather information, in collaboration with the prefectural authorities, regarding this tragic event and the progress of the search operations. Three people were rescued : two teachers and the canoe captain, and they were taken to the Grand-Santi Prevention and Care Center. According to the Prefecture of French Guiana, the bodies of the four other missing teachers have been recovered, thanks to search operations. In this time of sorrow, on behalf of the Haitian Government, the Consulate extends its sincere condolences to the families, loved ones, and all those affected by this tragedy, particularly the educational community. In accordance with its mission, the Consulate General of Haiti in French Guiana stands with these families to provide them with all necessary assistance during this time of grief. The Haitian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regrets to confirm the deaths of the four Haitian nationals who went missing in the canoe accident on the Maroni River near Grand-Santi on Saturday, January 31. They are : - Wantho LAMBERT, born August 26, 1992, in Port-au-Prince; - Mackteison Jerome, born March 23, 1994, in Aquin; - Jean-Ritchy Doirin, born December 27, 1995, in Port-au-Prince; - Vercius Rooseley Console, born August 27, 1990, in Léogâne. The Ministry respectfully bows before their memory and offers its deepest condolences to their families. The Ministry takes this opportunity to express the gratitude of the Haitian people and government to the sub-prefecture of Saint-Laurent-de-Maroni for the efforts and resources deployed in the search for the victims' bodies.
