iciHaiti - Diaspora France : René Depestre Centenary Celebrations

As part of the René Depestre centenary celebrations, the Haitian Embassy in France hosted an evening in the Mission's reception rooms to honor this Haitian writer, recognizing the immensity of his work, a living legacy for the nation and the world, as well as his contribution to the international renown of Haitian literature.

This event, held before an invited audience of prominent figures from the diplomatic, academic, literary, and cultural spheres, celebrated the life and work of one of Haiti's greatest writers and a leading figure in Francophone literature.

The evening featured a screening of the documentary "René Depestre : You Can't Miss an Eternal Life" allowing the audience to discover the exceptional journey of the poet and novelist, best known for his major work, "Hadriana dans tous mes rêves".

The event continued with a literary discussion featuring writer Louis-Philippe Dalembert, who shared reflections on René Depestre's intellectual journey, commitment, and literary legacy.

A book signing also allowed participants to purchase dozens of books by René Depestre and Louis-Philippe Dalembert.

In his remarks, Louino Volcy, Haiti's Ambassador to France, praised René Depestre's immense contribution: "We are gathered here to celebrate a great Haitian-French writer and to pay tribute to a voice that, for a century, has invited us to think, to dream, and to believe in the power of the human spirit," he declared.

According to him, the celebration of the writer's centenary must transcend Haitian national borders to embrace the international dimension of the man and the universal scope of his work, which is rooted in the great traditions of world poetry while also drawing upon Haiti's historical and cultural memory.
