In Haiti, training of municipal agents to act through sport 31/03/2026 09:53:36
On Monday, March 30, 2026, the Haitian National Sports Observatory (ONASH), the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Civic Action (MJSAC), with technical support from UNESCO and other partners, launched a three-day training program for municipal sports officials from eight municipalities in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area. This initiative focuses on social inclusion, community cohesion, and the mobilization of local governments. Under the theme "Sport for Peace and Social Inclusion" this initiative uses sport as a concrete tool for social cohesion, violence prevention, and the promotion of peace in Haiti. According to Edwin Charles, former Minister of the MJSAC (Sept. 2018 - March 2020) and President of ONASH "Through this initiative, we want to help municipal sports officials make sport a tool for action, community building, and peace within their communities." Jean Luc Tondreau of UNESCO emphasized "By supporting this training, UNESCO is backing an approach that leverages sport as a space for social cohesion, dialogue, and inclusion, in a context where communities need concrete tools to rebuild social bonds." Over three days, this training aims to equip participants with benchmarks, tools, and a more structured vision of the role sport can play in preventing violence and strengthening social cohesion at the community level.
