Study on medical waste management at La Paix University Hospital

A team from the Ministry of Public Health, through the Environmental Protection and Public Hygiene Service of the Directorate of Health Promotion and Environmental Protection (DPSPE), visited La Paix University Hospital. This initiative marked the official launch of the data collection phase of the "Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices" (KAP) study on the management of medical waste from healthcare activities, conducted by the Directorate of Environment and Health (DAS).

Started on March 30, 2026, this phase will continue until April 11 and will involve several healthcare facilities across the country, including university, departmental, and community referral hospitals.

Study Objectives :

• To assess healthcare professionals' knowledge of standards, procedures, and risks related to medical waste;

• To explore attitudes and perceptions regarding environmentally sound waste management practices;

• To generate reliable data at the national level regarding knowledge, attitudes, and practices;

• Identify the drivers and constraints to sustainable hospital waste management;

• Propose avenues for improvement to strengthen public policies, training, and internal procedures.

Objectives of the joint mission between the DPSPE and the Western Health Directorate :

• Ensure the quality of data collection in the field;

• Standardize working methods among the teams;

• Raise awareness among hospital managers about the importance of responsible waste management;

• Strengthen collaboration between health and hospital facilities.
