International Day for Monuments and Sites

On Saturday, April 18, 2026, as part of the International Day for Monuments and Sites, under the theme "Emergency Response for Living Heritage in Contexts of Conflicts and Disasters," the Institute for the Safeguarding of National Heritage (ISPAN) reaffirmed its commitment to protecting and promoting Haitian heritage.

ISPAN takes this opportunity to express, once again, its profound solidarity with the bereaved families and the entire Nation following the tragic events of April 11 at the Citadel https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-47284-incident-at-the-citadelle-laferriere-more-than-55-victims-reactions.html

While aware of the challenges associated with heritage management, ISPAN remains open and receptive to all proposals. Furthermore, it is worth recalling that it was for this very mission that the organization was founded and that its work led to the inscription of the Citadelle, Sans-Souci and Ramiers National Historical Park on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1982.

In the current context of Haiti, and in keeping with the theme of this day, the time has come for reflection and action. Drawing on its experience and expertise, ISPAN will continue to strengthen its interventions in close collaboration with communities, following government directives and in accordance with international conventions.

"The institution is convinced that safeguarding heritage is not the work of a single entity, but a collective duty that guarantees memory, dignity, and continuity for future generations."
