Towards the twinning of Bonou in Benin with Jérémie in Haiti 11/05/2026 09:57:17
On Friday, May 8, 2026, in a move firmly focused on international cooperation and local development, Mayor Emmanuel Dossou Zounmènou of Bonou, Benin, accompanied by First Deputy Mayor Paulin Akouégnihoundé and His Majesty Houézèzoun, was received by Dominique Brutus, Minister-Counsellor and Chargé d'Affaires of the Haitian Embassy in Benin, at the diplomatic mission in Cotonou. This strategic meeting advanced the twinning agreement between Bonou (a municipality in southeastern Benin, 250 km²) and Jérémie (South dept. of Haiti), focusing on agriculture, education, youth, tourism, and sectoral exchanges. Since taking office, the Mayor of Bonou has been forging numerous international partnerships to promote his municipality. The Chargé d'Affaires commended his commitment, highlighting the priority he has placed on ties with Beninese communities since the Embassy opened a year ago. The twinning agreement with Jérémie will focus on agricultural transformation (fish farming, soybeans), promoting local expertise. A "Space for Life" project will be launched at the Bonou Botanical Garden (13 hectares), an ecological and tourist hub. The mayors will soon finalize the details via videoconference, under the guidance of Chargé d'Affaires Dominique Brutus. Mayor Emmanuel Dossou Zounmènou invited the Haitian Minister of Foreign Affairs to Benin for a 24-hour visit on Friday, May 29, 2026. Dominique Brutus accepted the invitation and, during her visit, will discover the botanical garden, the tomb of Commander Forax, community forests, the endangered red-bellied monkeys, agro-industrial units, and the Zangbéto show at the Royal Palace. This diplomatic initiative positions Bonou as a modern municipality (estimated population of 53,970 in 2026) open to the world for sustainable development that serves its people. IH/ iciHaiti
