223rd of the flag, Message from the Consul of Haiti in Santiago, DR 19/05/2026 10:53:00
Message from Herns Laveaux, Consul General of Haiti and Head of Mission in Santiago, Dominican Republic, on the occasion of the 223rd anniversary of Flag Day and University Day. "May 18th holds a prominent place in the historical memory of the Haitian nation. This date marks the creation of the national flag in 1803 in Arcahaie, a founding symbol of Haiti’s unity and sovereignty. At this pivotal moment, the fathers of independence, through their commitment, courage, and sacrifices, laid the foundations for the building of a free and sovereign state. On this highly symbolic day, marking the 223rd anniversary of the bicolor flag, the Haitian community of the Cibao region joins in this commemoration, which invites reflection, contemplation, and a renewed commitment to the fundamental values of the Nation. In a context marked by multiple and persistent challenges, particularly in Haiti, the significance of this celebration remains essential, as it rekindles the sense of national belonging and the ideal of unity. Furthermore, May 18th is also dedicated to the University, a central institution in the nation-building process. It embodies a fundamental pillar of intellectual emancipation, the development of knowledge, and civic education. We express our hope that it will continue and fully strengthen its mission, contributing to the production of knowledge, the development of critical thinking, and the formation of responsible citizens committed to collective progress. On this occasion, the Consulate General of Haiti in Santiago, Dominican Republic, extends its patriotic greetings to all Haitian nationals living in the Dominican Republic, especially those in the Cibao region, and expresses its gratitude for their resilience and their commitment to national values. On this day of remembrance and national significance, may the Haitian flag continue to unite all the sons and daughters of the Nation around the ideals of unity, dignity, and solidarity, and remain a beacon of hope in the face of today's challenges."
