International Day for Biodiversity : Commitment from the Ministry of the Environment

As part of the celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity (May 22, 2026), celebrated under the global theme "Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development" the Haitian Ministry of the Environment reaffirmed its commitment to the protection, restoration, and enhancement of the country's biodiversity, an essential asset for life, climate resilience, food security, and sustainable development.

Haiti possesses exceptional biodiversity, characterized by a high concentration of endemic species and forest, coastal, and marine ecosystems of great ecological value. However, this natural wealth remains severely threatened by deforestation, soil erosion, pollution, unsustainable exploitation of natural resources, and the growing effects of climate change.

Faced with these challenges, the Ministry of the Environment, with the support of its national and international partners, is continuing to implement several strategic initiatives aimed at preserving the country's natural capital and strengthening the resilience of communities.

Within this framework, significant interventions are currently underway in several regions of the country, including:

• Sustainable management of wooded landscapes and biodiversity-rich areas in the North, Northeast, and Artibonite departments;

• Watershed restoration and improved ecosystem services in the South department;

• The establishment of green corridors and integrated natural resource management initiatives in Grande Anse;

• The development of resilient, productive territories in the Nippes and West departments;

• As well as initiatives related to the blue economy in the North and Northeast of the country.

The Ministry of the Environment commends the commitment of local authorities, community organizations, public institutions, researchers, young people, and technical and financial partners who are actively contributing to the protection and enhancement of Haitian biodiversity.

Biodiversity is now a major issue for Haiti's future. Preserving ecosystems, protecting natural resources, and promoting sustainable land management are essential conditions for improving the quality of life for communities and building a more resilient future.

On this International Day for Biological Diversity, the Ministry of the Environment invites every citizen to adopt responsible behaviors toward nature and to actively participate in efforts to preserve our national ecological heritage.
