Haiti's Minister of Education engages in dialogue with unions

On Tuesday, June 30, 2026, Vijonet Déméro, the Minister of National Education, received the leaders of Co-CFEF, an association and union of teachers and professionals trained by the Center for Fundamental Education Training, represented by Cédoine Felixma (President), Wadeline Chery (Western Coordinator), Hartelande Pierre (Treasurer), and Bill Marken Alexandre (Senior Advisor), and of the Regrouping of Primary School Teachers for a Renewed Education through New and Solidarity-Based Actions (REFERANS), represented by Claudin Louissaint (National Coordinator), Wilcoeur Marcelin (National Coordinator of the National Council for the Defense of REFERANS Members), and Sadrac Casimir (Referring's Delegate to the Coalition of Platforms and Unions for Quality Haitian Education).

The discussions covered several points, including updating the Curriculum Framework, aligning the salaries of primary and secondary school teachers with those of postgraduate teachers working full-time, regularizing the status of many teachers, the project to create the National Order of Educators of Haiti, organizing a forum of teachers' unions in anticipation of the next school year, and establishing the Public University of the West (UPO).

Following this meeting, Minister Vijonet Déméro and union leaders committed to further discussions aimed at improving teachers' working conditions and the quality of education.
