235th Bois Caïman : a living memory, a destination to visit (Video)

On Friday, August 14, 2026, as part of the 235th anniversary of the Bois-Caïman Ceremony, the Ministry of Tourism commemorated this historic site, which is an integral part of our identity and the country's cultural heritage.

Bois-Caïman is a remote location on the Lenormand de Mézy plantation in Morne-Rouge. On the night of August 14, 1791, Dutty Boukman organized a political and religious ceremony there for a large number of slaves. The priestess Mambo, Cécile Fatiman, sacrificed a black pig, and the attendees drank its blood to become invulnerable. Boukman then ordered a general uprising.

The Bois-Caïman ceremony is considered in Haiti to be the founding act of the Haitian Revolution and the War of Independence, the first major collective uprising in Haiti against slavery.

The Ministry of Tourism emphasizes that Bois Caïman is not only a place that embodies our memory, but also a site with significant tourism potential, capable of contributing to efforts to promote our heritage, develop cultural tourism, and share our history with future generations. Introducing visitors to Bois Caïman allows them to discover a fundamental chapter in Haitian history.

Bois Caïman is a living memory, a destination to visit or revisit !
