Farewell ceremony for the Ambassador of Canada André François Giroux 22/08/2026 09:19:14
On Friday, August 21, 2026, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé participated in a ceremony marking the departure of André François Giroux, Canada's Ambassador to Haiti, at the end of his two-year diplomatic term. Organized in the presence of Foreign Minister Raina Forbin, members of the Government, the new Apostolic Nuncio, Nigerian Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Okolo, and the diplomatic and consular corps, the ceremony was an opportunity to commend Ambassador Giroux's work and reaffirm the strength of the friendly relations and cooperation between Haiti and Canada. In his remarks, the outgoing Ambassador expressed his gratitude to the Haitian authorities and people for their welcome and cooperation. He also commended the efforts undertaken by the Haitian government to restore security. Raina Forbin emphasized the enduring friendship between the two countries and expressed Haiti’s gratitude for Canada’s support, particularly in the areas of security, strengthening the criminal justice system, the electoral process, and institutional stability. Paying tribute to a "great friend of Haiti" Prime Minister Fils-Aimé recalled that diplomatic relations between the two countries date back to 1954, while the ties between the two peoples are even older. He commended Canada’s unwavering commitment to Haiti and its contribution to efforts aimed at strengthening security, democratic institutions, and the electoral process. The Prime Minister concluded by expressing his deep appreciation to Ambassador Giroux for his availability and dedication during his tenure, and wished him continued success in his diplomatic career.
