Grand'Anse : Anthrax cases, 2 human deaths and 20 animal deaths...

The epidemiology team of the Grand'Anse Health Directorate (DSGA) received an alert regarding suspected cases of anthrax in Balivèn (5th communal section of Dammari)...

The DSGA epidemiology team quickly went to the site to investigate, provide the necessary responses, and strengthen epidemiological surveillance in the area.

Upon arrival, the team carried out the following actions : meeting with the community; raising awareness about anthrax prevention methods; identifying and registering suspected cases; treating identified individuals; and conducting home visits in the localities of Brézel and Brio.

A committee was also formed with local leaders and elders to contribute to surveillance and ensure the implementation of all protective measures.

Investigations have allowed the epidemiology team to identify approximately 13 suspected cases of anthrax, 2 human deaths, and 20 animal deaths.

The DSGA is asking the public to remain vigilant and follow all its recommendations to protect themselves and their families :

- Do not touch, skin, or consume the meat of dead animals;

- Do not sell or buy meat from dead animals;

- Bury dead animals deeply (at least 2 meters deep) and sprinkle lime on the carcass before covering it with soil to prevent the spread of Bacillus anthracis;

- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water every time you touch animals or work the land;

- Go immediately to the nearest health center if you notice a small black bump developing on your skin, or if you experience fever and pain after contact with animal meat.
