As part of the Ozone Awareness Month campaign, which runs until September 16, 2026, the Ministry of the Environment (MdE), through its National Ozone Bureau, trained 37 refrigeration and air conditioning professionals from Cap-Haitien and surrounding municipalities.

This training, organized with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aims to strengthen the skills of professionals in the sector, promote best practices in handling refrigerants, and progressively reduce the use of substances harmful to the ozone layer and the climate.

This training allowed these professionals to deepen their understanding of refrigerants, the substances used in refrigeration and air conditioning equipment to produce cold. Among these substances, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), when released into the atmosphere, deplete the ozone layer, the natural shield that protects the Earth from much of the Sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation.

Powerful greenhouse gases, CFCs and HCFCs also contribute to climate change. While the production and consumption of CFCs have been largely phased out, HCFCs are still undergoing a phase-out under the Montreal Protocol.

Participants also reported having a better understanding of Haiti's international commitments under the Montreal Protocol and its five amendments.
