Saturday September 5, 2026, as part of its border control strategy with Haiti, Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre, Dominican Minister of Defense, accompanied by the Commander General of the Army, Major General Jimmy Arias Grullón, and other civil and military authorities announced the start of construction work (Phase 2) of 14.5 kilometers of border wall in Jimaní, in the province of Independence,

This new section, with a height of 4 meters, will include 6 watchtowers, 35 culverts and 7m wide patrol lanes on either side of the structure. These installations are intended to facilitate the movement of military units and strengthen surveillance in the area.

According to authorities, this project is of particular importance due to its location in the Enriquillo Basin, facing Lake Azuei (also known as brackish pond), an area considered vulnerable to smuggling of goods and other illicit activities.

The Minister of Defense explained that this infrastructure is part of the "Strong Border" strategy, promoted by President Luis Abinader, which aims to combine technology, surveillance, mobility and military presence in the border region.

Let's remember that Jimaní is also a hotspot for trade between the Dominican Republic and Haiti, thanks to the presence of one of the main binational markets and the significant traffic of goods transport vehicles.

During this visit, Fernández Onofre and representatives of the Migration Policies Observatory, led by its Executive President, Miguel Franjul, also visited the new section of the border fence under construction in Dajabón, where they were able to see the progress of the work.

The Dominican Government affirms that the extension of the wall as well as the surveillance and patrol systems will strengthen territorial control and the operational capacities of the armed forces at key points on the border with Haiti.
