Jacmel : Mobilization against sargassum

Saturday September 5, teams from the National Solid Waste Management Service (SNGRS South-East), under the coordination of Wilner Sica, Departmental Director of SNGRS in the South-East, were hard at work in Raymond-les-Bains, alongside local stakeholders, to clean and preserve one of the region's emblematic beaches.

This intervention takes on particular importance in this period marked by the recurring strandings of sargassum, which affect the Haitian coasts each year, in particular the beaches of the South-East and the South, like many countries in the Caribbean.

Faced with this phenomenon which goes beyond our borders, we must act on two levels :

1 - In the immediate future, we must mobilize public services, local authorities, the private sector, local organizations and citizens to ensure collection, keep our beaches clean and limit the impacts on communities, fishing, tourism and the environment.

2 - In the long term, Haiti must continue, with its Caribbean partners and the international community, the search for sustainable solutions for the collection, processing and especially the valorization of sargassum, in order to gradually transform this environmental constraint into local economic opportunities.

This is also the meaning of Konbit Haiti Zero Waste : act now, mobilize territories and gradually build sustainable responses Nou chak gen yon wòl pou n jwe. Ann mete men ansanm pou pwoteje plaj nou yo epi bati yon Ayiti ki pi pwòp, pi bèl, pi djanm.
