Security and electoral outlook in Haiti
On September 29, 2026, in Port-au-Prince, Minister of Foreign Affairs Raina Forbin received the new French Ambassador to Haiti, Gautier Lekens. Both welcomed the United Nations Security Council's renewal of the mandate for the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-48554-renewal-of-the-gsf-mandate-and-reactions-at-the-security-council.html and emphasized the importance of the GSF’s full deployment for restoring security in Haiti. Discussions also focused on the Franco-Mexican initiative aimed at regulating the use of the veto in the Security Council in cases of mass atrocities. France hopes that as many partners and friends as possible will join this initiative. Finally, the Ambassador and the Minister discussed the prospect of upcoming elections in Haiti. France supports—while fully respecting the prerogatives of the Haitian State—an electoral process capable of restoring confidence, featuring candidacies and actors fully aligned with the transparency and integrity requirements of a free and democratic election. France will continue to work closely with Haitian authorities and international partners to support efforts toward security, stability, and sustainable development. IH/ iciHaiti
