The French Ambassador to Haiti discussed security and the electoral process with the PM

The French Ambassador to Haiti, Gautier Lekens, spoke with Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé on October 8, 2026. This meeting took place against the backdrop of the operational launch of the Gang Supression Force (GSF) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-48624-haiti-flash-operational-launch-of-the-gang-suppression-force.html, electoral preparations and the publication of the report by the United Nations Group of Experts https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-48614-haiti-flash-a-shocking-un-report-reveals-the-system-fueling-the-chaos-in-haiti.html

The Ambassador welcomed the improvements observed in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area, while emphasizing their still fragile nature and the need for long-term consolidation. The strengthening of the FRG and the Haitian security forces should lead to concrete and lasting progress for the population.

The Political Process and Electoral Prospects

Following the amendment to the electoral decree and in light of the UN experts' report, the Ambassador reaffirmed France's commitment to a credible electoral process that allows Haitians to freely choose their leaders, with candidates meeting the integrity requirements essential for a free and democratic election.

He also reiterated France's commitment to the United Nations and European Union sanctions regimes and their full implementation.

The future President of Haiti must be able to represent his country with dignity, defend its interests, and act in the best interests of its people, both in Haiti and on the international stage.

France will continue its dialogue with the Haitian authorities and its partners to support efforts promoting security, institutional stability, and a credible democratic process.
