iciHaiti - Environment : Prospects for cooperation with the OAS
On Thursday, October 8, 2026, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé met with Mark Lambrides, Director of the Department of Sustainable Development at the Organization of American States (OAS), to discuss prospects for cooperation regarding waste management, community reforestation, youth integration, and territorial stabilization. Valéry Fils-Aimé, Minister of the Environment, and Catherine Pognat, Resident Representative of the OAS Secretary General in Haiti, also participated in the meeting. This meeting follows the recent visit to Haiti by OAS Secretary General Albert Ramdin—who had tasked Mark Lambrides with a four-day mission focused on Haiti’s environmental priorities. Discussions centered on the "Clean, Safe and Resilient Territories" proposal, which targets five departments: West, Artibonite, North, Northeast, and Centre. The project outlines initiatives for sustainable waste management, community reforestation, and the training of at least 2,000 young leaders tasked with promoting environmental responsibility, civic engagement, and social cohesion. This initiative aims to create job opportunities for young people, strengthen community resilience, and support national efforts to restore security—particularly by facilitating the safe and dignified return of displaced families. Discussions also focused on finalizing the project, funding mechanisms, support from the Office of the Prime Minister, and developing a roadmap for launching initial interventions, under the coordination of the Ministry of the Environment and in collaboration with the relevant institutions.
