iciHaiti - Border markets : The Dominican authorities propose to open 2 more days
The Dominican authorities have proposed to Haiti to increase by 2 days the operation of the weekly border markets which is currently set at 2 days (Monday and Friday). This proposal to make the border markets work 4 days a week was made by the Dominican Minister of Defense, Rubén Darío Paulino, during a meeting at Pedernales on February 21st.

The Director General of Customs of the Dominican Republic, the Mayor of Pedernales, the City Delegate and the Head of the Customs Office of the Dominican Province, the Representative of the Support Group for Repatriated and Refugees (GARR) in Anse-à- Pitres (Southeast) and a merchant association representative took part in the meeting that lasted about two hours. No member of the Government was present...

During his speech Mayor Harry Bruno of Anse-à-Pitres, said that the decision to increase the number of border market days was not a priority at the moment. According to him, other issues deserve to be resolved before, such as the prohibition against Haitian traders to market poultry products in the Dominican market of Pedernales and the frequent conflicts between Dominican and Haitian sinners.

However, Mayor Bruno has indicated that he will submit the proposal of the Dominican authorities to the Haitian Government.
