iciHaiti - Security : Strategic agreement between the National Geospatial Center and the UNDP
Following the national forum on the management of data related to major natural hazards, held in Port-au-Prince, Boby Emmanuel Piard the Director General of the National Center for Geospatial Information (CNIGS) and Fernando Hiraldo, Resident Representative of the United Nations Program United Nations Development (UNDP) signed on Thursday, June 27, a memorandum of understanding on data exchange and technical cooperation.

Boby Emmanuel Piarda explained that this agreement concerns inter alia a reciprocal exchange of georeferenced data developed in the context of the respective interventions of the two institutions, recalling "Preliminary discussions on the establishment of a database on risks and disasters with colleagues from the Civil Protection Department date back to 2007. With the support of UNDP, this 12-year-old dream is about to materialize."

In addition, the agreement also provides for strengthening technical cooperation between the two institutions. UNDP is committed to systematizing the involvement of CNIGS managers in the development of technical and methodological support, in the strategy and implementation of skills transfer and knowledge management in the field of natural hazards, more largely in the field of spatial planning.

In his speech, Fernando Hiraldo underlined "Haiti has made enormous progress in recent years in terms of risk awareness, thanks in particular to the various financial partners such as the European Union, the Governments of Norway and Canada. Even if the path is well traced, there is still some way to go. UNDP is firmly convinced that these efforts must be sustained over time. Fortunately, we can count on a national counterpart to develop dynamic and solid partnerships to carry out actions whose lasting impacts will benefit the Haitian population.é

Through this protocol, UNDP has reiterated its commitment to the Government of Haiti, to support knowledge on natural hazards, insisting that "the availability of quality data is essential for disaster prevention and management and are essential supports to decision-making."
