iciHaiti - Justice : Pre-trial detention cases, piority to women 19/03/2018 09:49:10
On the initiative of the "Gender and Model Jurisdiction" sections, of the United Nations Mission for the Support of Justice in Haiti (Minujusth), the Dean Bernard Saint-Vil and the Government Commissioner Ocnam Clame Dameus, near the Prosecutor's Office of Port-au-Prince, agreed to give priority to cases involving women in pre-trial detention extended until April 3 (National Day of the Movement of Haitian Women) and decided to reserve half of its courtrooms with ongoing cases, involving women in pre-trial detention [imprisoned without having been tried sometimes for several years] in the jurisdiction of Port-au-Prince. Let's recall that in Haiti, women, although representing only 3.7% of the prison population, face more difficulties than men in the criminal justice system. Often of greater precariousness, most of them can not assume the expenses of a lawyer before their judgment to address requests, to make auditions and to prepare their file. In the end, an instruction slower for a larger proportion of women awaiting trial: 82% of women and 95% of young girls are now in pretrial detention, compared to 74% of men. See also : IH/ iciHaiti
