iciHaiti - Humanitarian : UN plans aid distribution by helicopter 15/11/2019 10:18:32
Because of the many roadblocks and lack of security that hinder the work of international humanitarian organizations to help hundreds of thousands of Haitians in vulnerable situations, for nearly two months, the United Nations plans to distribute the humanitarian aid to Haiti by air, announced Fernando Hiraldo, United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Haiti.
He said that it is planned to set up a United Nations humanitarian air service (UNHAS) using a helicopter, which could be operational from next week and will initially work for a period of three months "What is planned is to provide the necessary assistance to people in need without being prevented in these operations by barricades or by the presence of armed men or the attack of convoys..."
The implementation of this aid is still "in the planning phase", the UN is currently discussing with the Haitian airport authority and has already negotiated a contract with a company for the helicopter "If we are able to settle all outstanding points by the end of this week, we may be able to open this service next week," said Fernando Hiraldo.
