iciHaiti - Agriculture : FAO support for the spring agricultural campaign
In order to support farm families to prepare for the spring season in the context of the current humanitarian and health crisis, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations supports the efforts of the Ministry of Agricuture by carrying out a campaign of distribution of agricultural inputs in the Departments of North-East, North-West, Nippes and Grand'Anse, the most affected by food insecurity.

This technical assistance to farmers living in rural areas is part of the FAO Emergency Response Program. With this support, the Organization intends to contribute to the success of the spring agricultural campaign, which is the most important for rural households since it contributes to more than 50% of production at the national level.

During this agricultural campaign, the FAO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, intends to distribute 134 tonnes of cereal seeds (rice and maize) and legumes (beans/lima beans, pigeon peas, peanuts) and 7, 9 million cuttings of sweet potato and cassava, to 9,900 farming families (around 50,000 people) distributed in the four departments mentioned above.

This support is financed by FAO's own funds, the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) and Belgian Development Cooperation.

In addition to input distribution activities, FAO supports the efforts of the Haitian government in its fight against the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. José Luis Fernández, FAO Representative in Haiti, believes that responsibility in the fight against the pandemic must be shared. "We have a duty to help the rural communities we support to protect themselves from the coronavirus. This is why, we carry out awareness sessions on agricultural input distribution sites so as to bring the population to know and apply the instructions of the Ministry of Health".
